How to get a marriage license in Washington or Oregon State:

You've just set a date for your wedding...what an exciting time for the two of you! Don't let the marriage license laws of Washington or Oregon state deter your wedding plans.

Here's what you need to know and what documents to bring with you to apply for a Washington or Oregon State marriage license.

Get the marriage license legal aspect of your wedding out of the way about a month before your wedding date. Marriage license requirements may vary as each county in Washington or Oregon could have their own rules.

ID and Residency Requirement:

Some counties may require a picture ID before they will issue a marriage license. You should know your Social Security numbers. You do not have to be a resident of Washington or Oregon to get a marriage license in either state.

Previous Marriages: A divorce must be final and filed before applicants can apply for a license. You will not be asked for proof of divorce. You are expected to comply with the laws of the state in which you were last married.

In Washington State and Oregon, both the groom and the bride must be at least 18 years old to obtain a marriage license. With parental consent, the couple may be granted a license at 17 years old. Although no medical exam is required, Washington and Oregon require an affidavit swearing non-affliction with venereal disease.

There is a three-day waiting period for a marriage license in Washington and Oregon, and once issued it is valid for 60 days. The cost of a marriage license varies from county to county, from $37.00 - $70.00, so you should contact the issuing County marriage license office for the current cost.

A Marriage License must be issued 72 hours in advance of wedding. The waiting period may be waived in Oregon. It cannot be waived in Washington. Inquire at the issuing County office.
